After graduating from OCAD University with a degree in Industrial Design, I landed my first design job as a Junior Product Designer at Helcim in Calgary, AB. It was an exciting start to my career, and my very first project turned out to be a dream opportunity—working on Helcim’s 2nd Generation Card Reader. As an industrial design graduate passionate about both physical and digital product design, this was the perfect challenge. Helcim even brought in a 3D printer to the office, and I sourced foam materials to begin prototyping. That marked the start of an incredible journey.
I truly enjoyed the entire design process, collaborating closely with the CEO and working alongside OtterBox® to refine the product. I built multiple test prototypes, applying my skills in Fusion 360 and SolidWorks to develop and iterate on the design. Beyond product development, I also contributed to packaging design and created 3D render visuals for the product. Seeing this project evolve from concept to a real product in the market was an incredibly rewarding experience.
While I can’t share all the details due to NDA restrictions, you can check out Helcim’s official blog & video for a deeper look into the development process and some behind-the-scenes production images!
